After last Monday's terrorist attack which killed 35 people and injured more than 180 others at Moscow's Domododevo airport, the Federal Investigative Committee finally announced that Russian investigators knew the identity of the suicide bomber.
It's a 20-year-old man from the north Caucasus who exploded the bomb in the airport's international arrivals hall.
"I would especially like to note that it was by no means an accident that the act of terror was committed in the international arrivals hall."Spokesman Vladimir Markin said. "The terrorist attack was aimed first and foremost at foreign citizens." Several foreigners were indeed killed including one person each from Britain, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
After the accident, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is said to have sacked a regional transport chief, a Moscow police deputy head and other officials because of the poor security.
The bomb blast is the latest in a series of terrorist attacks in Russia over the last few years like the bombing of Moscow underground system last March by two female suicide bombers, killing 40 people.
My opinion: This accident challenged the security of Russian's airports and their protection against terrorism, above all this blast targeted foreigners as Russia is going to host the 2014 Winter Olympics bringing a lot of tourists. We can doubt on their ability to prevent the same kind of accident, hoping the security will be improve before then.

Child sent back to Russia can’t be re-adopted
Saturday 22, January
Torry Hansen, a thirty-three-year-old American woman, refuses to give up her parental rights on Artyom Savelyev, the Russian eight-year-old boy she had adopted in 2009 and sent back to Moscow in April 2010, said the children’s ombudsman Pavel Astakhov last Tuesday.
On April 8, 2010, Torry Hansen put Artyom on a plane to Moscow alone, with a note of his adopted mother saying that the child was “mentally unstable, violent” and suffered of “severe psychopathic issues”. She said that the Russian orphanage director had lied to her about the mental stability of Artyom.
The case caused the outraged Foreign Ministry to call for a freeze of the adoptions of Russian orphans until an agreement between Russia and other countries is signed.
“It is a monstrous deed on the part of his adoptive parents, to take the kid and virtually throw him out with the airplane in the opposite direction” told President Medvedev to ABC News, also shocked by the incident with Artyom.
As long as Torry Hansen doesn’t give up her parental rights, Artyom can’t be adopted by another family and has to stay at a Moscow clinic. Astakhov said he would try to get support payments from Hansen, who defended herself by saying that she sent her adopted-son to Russia because he wanted to see his biological mother, but it’s in contradiction with the note and the ombudsman added that Hansen was just trying to avoid the child support payments.
Artyom is not the only one waiting for a family; indeed, since the halt of adoption processes in May 2010, about 3,500 Russian orphans have been waiting to be adopted by U.S families, according to the Joint Council on International Children’s Services.
My opinion:
It’s horrible to be able to abandon a child that way, even if he had been adopted only for a few months. Torry Hansen sent Artyom back to Russia as if he was just a toy that you no longer want.
The agreements that are going to be signed between the countries will be a landmark because such a case must never happen again.

Abandonné sans espoir d’adoption
Samedi 22 janvier

Language handicap
Russia has a great problem with the English language and it’s really detrimental to relationship with foreign countries.
Recently a Russian academy translated its website intoEnglish but there were a lot of mistakes. For exemple the Belka Institute became the Squirrel Institute as Belki means squirrel in Russian, Wich was really humiliating. Even the Sports Minister uses approximate English.
The government has decided to react and wants 20% of state workers to know a foreign language and new bureaucrats to be competent in English by 2020.
Paradoxically, the Russian vocabulary includes more and more words derived from theEnglish language and not only in buisness. Words like tineydzhery for teenager or riteyl for retail are emerging in modern Russian.
Some people protest against this anglicisation like linguist Yury Alekseyev who thinks that it’s better to use Russian words rather than a mixture of English and Russian especially when those words are meaningless.
To stop the anglicisation, the government bans companies from using English catchphrases without translation.
My opinion: If Russia has difficulty with foreign languages it is because it has long believed it could stand on its own but now it has been overtaken by globalization, which requires the use of English as a common language. The use of new words with English roots is not a separate case in a period of globalization. The French too coined words like tennisman, which as no meaning in English. So if Russia knows this problem only now, it proves that it has refused globalization for a long time.

Handicap linguistique

A new link with China
The new oil pipeline between Siberia and the north-eastern Chinese city of Daqing, which connects the world's biggest oil producer, Russia, and the world's biggest consumer of energy, China, has begun to operate.
Russia's network of pipelines for oil exports has always run towards Europe but Russian oil was transported to China by rail.According to Yao Wei, general manager of Pipeline Branch of Petro China, "The operation of the China-Russia crude oil pipeline is the start of a new phase in China-Russia energy co-operation."The project cost $25 billion and is expected to export 15m tonnes of oil each year during the next two decades which represents around 300,000 barrels a day.In the past, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has also said that the pipeline would help Russia diversify its exports.
When the construction of a second stage is completed by 2014 the pipeline will span a distance of 4,700 km.

Un nouveau lien avec la Chine
Dimanche 2 Janvier

Putin sells
Thursday 9 December
Because of the recent victory of Russia for the 2018 world cup organisation, a buisnessman allegedly wants to bank on national pride. He is said to have printed the photo of Vladimir Putine standing outside a football stadium lawn on lawn grass packaging with a caption saying the prime minister offers everyone the possibility to own football stadium lawn. Bloggers have spread the story
Putine had many meetings with the FIFA officials to promote the Russian candidacy. The fact that a photo of Putine is used instead of Medvedev photo is due to the association of the prime minister to the victory of the world cup organisation.
A journalist is said to have taken a photo of this packaging with Putin’s face and the slogan: “Be prepared for World Cup 2018!” in a famous Russian mall.
After some investigation other journalists coudn’t find the grass in any store, it is not known for the moment whether this product really exist or if it’s just a hoax.

Broutez Poutine

An emergency landing leaves two dead and 80 injured persons
In Moscow, a passenger plane made an emergency landing because of engines failure as it was taking off the runway, leaving two dead and more than 80 wounded.
The plane, a Russian-built TU-154 with around 170 passengers on board, was on a flight from Vnukovo Airport in Moscow to Southern Russia when it had to make an emergency landing in Domodevo airport, it rolled off the runway and broke up.
"I was sitting in the middle. The plane broke in two about four or five seats in front of me as if it had been cut, completely." a passenger said.
The first engine failed after the take-off, the second failed during the flight and the third stopped during the emergency landing itself but the incident is currently under investigation.
In January, as a result of a series of crashes, Russia's national carrier airline Aeroflot took all its TU-154 out of service. In Europe these planes are banned from landing because of excessive noise. That's the reason why only smaller airlines across Russia and the former Soviet-Union are still using the Tupolev mid-range. Moreover the plane that crashed and caused the death of the Polish president earlier this year was also a TU-154.
