Margarita Gracheva was battered woman who lived with her husband Dmitry Grachev and their two kids.
In December 201, Dmitry Grachev took his wife into a forest and cut her both hands off with an axe.
A month before, he had threatened her with a knife. He put it on her throat just because he thought she cheated on him. When she went to the police they said “ You and he will make up soon. It’s nothing serious.” And they closed the case in early December. Three days later Dmitry cut both of her hands off.
In February 2017 MPs removed some form of domestic abuse from the criminal code, first-time offenders who beat a relative but don't send them to hospital. They have to pay a penalty but will not go to jail.
Margarita’s case highlights the law about domestic violence but it’s still not enough. The legal move sparked street protest. A new report by Human Rights Watch argues the change in the law deprived women of crucialprotection.
Her now ex-husband Dmitry Grachev has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison and he can’t see their children who don’t know anything about the incident. Her story has emboldened a lot of abused women.

Un mois auparavant, il l’avait menacé avec un couteau qu’il avait placé sous sa gorge car il pensait qu’elle le trompait.
Le lendemain elle est allé voir la police mais on lui a répondu : « vous allez vous réconcilier. Ce n’est rien de sérieux. ». Puis ils ont classé l’affaire début décembre. Trois jours plus tard il lui a coupé les mains.
En février 2017 les députés ont retiré du code pénal une forme de violence familiale, les délinquants primaires qui battent un membre de leur famille mais ne les ont pas envoyés à l’hôpital doivent seulement payer une amende mais ne vont pas en prison.
Le cas de Margarita a attiré l’attention sur les lois relatives à la violence domestique, mais ce n’est toujours pas suffisant. L’histoire de Margarita a provoqué des manifestations. Un nouveau rapport de Human Rights Watch affirme que la modification de la loi a privé les femmes d'une protection cruciale.
