Torry Hansen, a thirty-three-year-old American woman, refuses to give up her parental rights on Artyom Savelyev, the Russian eight-year-old boy she had adopted in 2009 and sent back to Moscow in April 2010, said the children’s ombudsman Pavel Astakhov last Tuesday.
On April 8, 2010, Torry Hansen put Artyom on a plane to Moscow alone, with a note of his adopted mother saying that the child was “mentally unstable, violent” and suffered of “severe psychopathic issues”. She said that the Russian orphanage director had lied to her about the mental stability of Artyom.
The case caused the outraged Foreign Ministry to call for a freeze of the adoptions of Russian orphans until an agreement between Russia and other countries is signed.
“It is a monstrous deed on the part of his adoptive parents, to take the kid and virtually throw him out with the airplane in the opposite direction” told President Medvedev to ABC News, also shocked by the incident with Artyom.
As long as Torry Hansen doesn’t give up her parental rights, Artyom can’t be adopted by another family and has to stay at a Moscow clinic. Astakhov said he would try to get support payments from Hansen, who defended herself by saying that she sent her adopted-son to Russia because he wanted to see his biological mother, but it’s in contradiction with the note and the ombudsman added that Hansen was just trying to avoid the child support payments.
Artyom is not the only one waiting for a family; indeed, since the halt of adoption processes in May 2010, about 3,500 Russian orphans have been waiting to be adopted by U.S families, according to the Joint Council on International Children’s Services.
My opinion:
It’s horrible to be able to abandon a child that way, even if he had been adopted only for a few months. Torry Hansen sent Artyom back to Russia as if he was just a toy that you no longer want.
The agreements that are going to be signed between the countries will be a landmark because such a case must never happen again.

Abandonné sans espoir d’adoption

Torry Hansen, une Américaine de trente-trois ans, refuse d’abandonner ses droits parentaux sur Artyom Savelyev, son fils adoptif qu’elle avait renvoyé à Moscou en avril 2010, a déclaré Pavel Astakhov, le médiateur du garçon, mardi dernier.
Le 8 avril 2010, Torry Hansen avait renvoyé Artyom dans son pays d’origine tout seul, en avion, avec une note disant que l’enfant était «mentalement instable, violent» et qu’il souffrait de «graves problèmes psychiatriques». Elle raconta que le directeur de l’orphelinat russe lui avait menti sur l’état mental d’Artyom.
L’affaire entraîna l’indignation du Ministère des Affaires Etrangères, qui demanda à ce que les adoptions soient suspendues jusqu’à ce qu’un accord intergouvernemental soit signé.
« C’est un acte monstrueux de la part de ses parents adoptifs de prendre l’enfant et de l’expédier avion, dans la direction opposée » a confié à ABC News le Président Medvedev, lui aussi choqué par l’affaire.
Tant que Torry Hansen n’abandonne pas ses droits parentaux, aucune famille ne pourra adopter Artyom et il devra rester dans une clinique de Moscou. Astakhov a dit qu’il essaierait d’obtenir une pension alimentaire de la part de Hansen, qui s’est défendue en déclarant qu’elle avait renvoyé son fils adoptif en Russie parce qu’il voulait voir sa mère biologique, ce qui est en contradiction avec la note qu’elle avait laissée à Artyom. Astakhov a ajouté qu’Hansen essayait juste d’éviter d’avoir à payer une pension alimentaire.
Artyom est loin d’être un cas isolé, en effet, depuis la suspension des procédures d’adoption en mai dernier, environ 3500 orphelins russes attendent d’être adoptés par des familles américaines, selon le Conseil International des Services de l’Enfant.
Mon opinion:
Il est terrible d’être capable d’abandonner son fils ainsi, même s’il a été adopté depuis peu de temps. Torry Hanson a renvoyé Artyom comme s’il n’était qu’un paquet dont on ne veut plus.
Les accords qui vont être signés entre les pays sont une excellente décision, car une telle affaire ne doit pas se reproduire.
