Russia steps up control of Middle East

On October 22, Russia and Turkey signed an agreement in Sotchi, Russia.

The agreement acknowledges Turkey’s control of Syrian borders but puts an end to the Turkey’s attack against Kurdish militias.

The agreement excludes any Kurdish military presence eighteen miles from the Syrian border. Russia will supervise Kurdish evacuation and disarmament process. Kurds are considered terrorists by Turkey. Combined forces will patrol the area.

Turkey says Kurdish military power is not a problem now, but that Turkey would do the necessary if they were to meet any resistance.

Russia and Turkey suggest Syrian refugees be repatriated on a voluntary basis.

Kurds are afraid of ethnic cleansing by Syrian militias connected to the Turks. Their fear is not being able to keep jihadists locked after they retreat.

With this agreement Putin expands his hegemony in the Middle East, an oil-rich strategic region.
